History and Origin of Krakhuna Wine

Krakhuna is one of the most distinguished white grape varieties of western Georgia, originating from the Imereti region, particularly the villages around Baghdati. The name “Krakhuna” translates to “crispy” or “hard,” reflecting the grape’s thick skin and its naturally high sugar concentration, which allows it to produce full-bodied, well-structured white wines.

Historical sources indicate that Krakhuna has been cultivated for centuries in Imereti’s warm, humid climate and fertile clay-limestone soils. The grape was traditionally grown on small family vineyards, where it became highly valued for its ability to ripen late in the season and develop exceptional sweetness without losing its vibrant acidity. This made Krakhuna one of the most reliable varieties for producing both dry and semi-sweet wines.

In the 19th century, Krakhuna became increasingly celebrated among Georgian winemakers for its richness and aromatic depth. Unlike many Imeretian grapes known for lighter profiles, Krakhuna offered a fuller, more expressive character, often compared to European white varieties of the era. It was frequently blended with Tsitska and Tsolikauri to enhance body and complexity, but it also gained recognition as an exceptional single-varietal wine.

Traditional Imeretian winemaking includes partial skin contact in Qvevri, creating Krakhuna wines with golden hues, notes of ripe pear, quince, citrus, dried apricot, and a touch of honey. Modern European-style vinification highlights its crisp acidity and fresh fruit aromas, resulting in elegant, balanced wines with great aging potential.
