History and Origin of Kakhuri Mtsvane Wine

Kakhuri Mtsvane — often simply called Mtsvane — is one of Georgia’s most cherished indigenous white grape varieties, native to the eastern region of Kakheti. Its name translates to “green” due to the grape’s bright greenish skin and the fresh, vibrant character it gives to the wine. Historical evidence suggests that Mtsvane has been cultivated in Kakheti for thousands of years, evolving alongside the region’s ancient winemaking traditions.

Traditionally grown in micro-zones such as Manavi, Kakabeti, and Telavi, Kakhuri Mtsvane thrives in Kakheti’s dry climate and sun-rich valleys. These natural conditions allow the grape to develop intense aromatics, balanced acidity, and a delicate sweetness. For centuries, it has been one of the key varieties used to craft premium Georgian white wines.

Ancient Kakhetian winemaking techniques, especially Qvevri fermentation, have played a major role in shaping the identity of Mtsvane. When fermented on the skins in clay vessels, the wine becomes rich, amber-colored, and deeply flavorful — with notes of dried fruit, wild herbs, apricot, quince, citrus, and floral undertones. This style has been produced in Georgian families and villages for generations.
