How Rkatsiteli Was Born – History and Tradition

History and Origin of Rkatsiteli Wine

Rkatsiteli is one of the world’s oldest and most iconic grape varieties, originating in Georgia — the birthplace of wine. Archaeological discoveries across eastern and central Georgia reveal grape seeds genetically identical to modern Rkatsiteli, dating back 6,000–8,000 years, proving its ancient winemaking heritage. These findings highlight Georgia’s historic role as the cradle of viticulture and its continuous wine tradition since the Neolithic era. The name “Rkatsiteli” comes from two Georgian words: “rka” (horn), referring to the cluster’s shape, and “tsiteli” (red), describing the grape’s slightly reddish-pink skin. Although it is classified as a white grape, this subtle pigment gives it a unique character and appearance. For centuries, Rkatsiteli has been at the heart of Georgian culture and traditional winemaking, especially in the Kakheti region. It was a leading variety in royal wine cellars and remains essential in crafting both classic European-style wines and authentic Qvevri wines, produced in ancient clay vessels recognized by UNESCO. Rkatsiteli wines are valued for their crisp acidity, mineral structure, aromas of green apple, white peach, citrus, and gentle spices, along with impressive aging potential. During the 20th century, the grape spread beyond Georgia to regions such as Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, and even the United States, particularly the Finger Lakes. However, its true expression remains in Georgia, where ideal terroir and traditional methods bring out the grape’s full character.

Rkatsiteli stands out for its natural high acidity, strong sense of terroir, compatibility with Qvevri fermentation, and unique balance of freshness and complexity. These qualities make it one of Georgia’s most important and distinguished white grape varieties, beloved both locally and worldwide.
