History and Origin of Tsitska Wine

Tsitska is a traditional white grape variety from western Georgia, primarily cultivated in the Imereti region. Known for its naturally high acidity, freshness, and light aromatic profile, Tsitska has been an essential part of Imeretian winemaking heritage for hundreds of years. Historical records trace the grape’s cultivation back to the early centuries of Georgian viticulture, where it thrived in the humid, hilly landscapes and well-drained clay-limestone soils of western Georgia.

The name “Tsitska” is associated with the grape’s small, bright-colored berries and its ability to produce clean, delicate wines. Throughout history, Tsitska was often used in blends with other local varieties such as Tsolikauri and Krakhuna, contributing structure and vibrant acidity. However, it has also long been appreciated as a single-varietal wine, especially in villages surrounding Baghdati and Zestafoni, where the grape traditionally achieved its best expression.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Tsitska became one of western Georgia’s most widely produced and exported wines. Its stable acidity and clarity made it particularly suitable for sparkling wine production — a practice still continued in modern Georgian wineries. Traditionally, Tsitska was vinified using both European-style fermentation and the Imeretian Qvevri method, which uses less skin contact than Kakhetian techniques, resulting in lighter, fruit-driven wines with subtle minerality.
